Minibus (marshrutka)

  • To Sighnaghi: from Samgori metro station (Navtlugi bus terminal), about 15 ₾, 2 to 2.5 hours, several a day between about 9:00 and 18:00.
  • To Telavi: from Ortachala bus station or Navtlugi, about 12 to 15 ₾, 2 to 3 hours, many a day.
  • Between Sighnaghi and Telavi there are only one or two minibuses a day, so a driver is easier.

Shared taxi or your own driver

  • Shared taxis wait near Isani metro station and leave when full: about 20 to 30 ₾ per seat, around 2 hours.
  • A whole car with a driver from Tbilisi costs about 150 to 180 ₾. See our Drivers page, or ask your host.

Getting around Kakheti

  • Wine cellars, monasteries and villages are spread out. The easiest way is a driver for the day, or ask your host.
  • Planning wine tastings? Do not drive yourself. Georgia has strict drink-driving rules.

Driving yourself

  • The roads are paved and any normal car is fine.
  • Two ways from Tbilisi: the Kakheti highway (faster) or over the Gombori Pass to Telavi (more bends, great views; careful in winter snow).

When to come

  • Kakheti is open all year.
  • September and October are the grape harvest (rtveli), the busiest and most fun time. Book early.
  • Spring is green and mild. Winter is quiet and cheaper, and many cellars still welcome guests.

Money, phone and emergencies

  • There are ATMs in Telavi, Sighnaghi and Kvareli. Small guest houses usually want cash in lari.
  • Mobile signal is good in the towns and most villages.
  • Emergency number in Georgia: 112.
